Totus Tuus Rosary Novenas
to Our Lady of the Holy Rosary of Pompeii
1. Our Lady of the Holy Rosary of Pompeii - “Shrine of the Pope”:
The Shrine of Our Lady of Pompeii is the Shrine of the Queen of the Holy Rosary and the “54” Day Rosary novena that was built by Blessed Bartolo Longo in Pompeii, Italy. “Miracles were reported and pilgrimages began to frequent the place. Hence, in 1883, when the sanctuary was completed (and would be consecrated on May 8, 1891), Bartolo Longo entrusted the architect Rispoli with the construction of the throne of the Virgin and directed an appeal to the faithful: "In this place selected for its prodigies, we wish to leave to present and future generations a monument to the Queen of Victories that will be less unworthy of her greatness but more worthy of our faith and love." Four years later he saw the celebration of a threefold feast of the inauguration, the crowning, and the enthroning of the picture of Our Lady of the Rosary.”1
“What was taking place in Pompeii came to the notice of Pope Leo XIII who, as early as 1883 published his first encyclical on the Rosary, consequently showing his gratitude to Bartolo… The "Great Year" of exchanges between the Vatican and Pompeii was 1894. Bartolo Longo offered the Shrine and all it contained to the Pope. Leo XIII accepted the gift and detached the Shrine from the diocese of Nola, declaring it part of the Papal Estates and therefore under its immediate rule… Pope Leo XIII became the first herald of the marvels of Pompeii, exhorting the pilgrims: "Go to Pompeii; go and pray for the Pope in the Shrine of the Pope!"2
2. Our Lady of the Holy Rosary of Pompeii
– Shrine of the 54 Day Rosary Novena:
“The prodigies of the Madonna, whose picture of the Rosary had already been placed in the church that was being built, attracted so many people and donations that an impressive temple and throne of the Madonna was erected….Our Lady assisted powerfully in the construction of the shrine by granting graces and favors to benefactors of the enterprise. "If you wish to be cured" she said to a dying person "go to my church at Pompeii". In 1884 she appeared to dying Fortuna Agrelli and after curing her said: "Whoever desires to obtain favors from me should make three (nine day) novenas of the rosary in petition … and three (nine day novenas of the Rosary) … in thanksgiving". This is the so-called fifty-four day novena which is so popular with devotees of Our Lady of Pompeii. By 1885 some 940 cures were recorded and described in Blessed Bartolo’s history of the shrine.”3
3. Totus Tuus Rosary Crusade to Our Lady of the Rosary of Pompeii: “On October 21, 1979, John Paul II went on pilgrimage to Pompeii and gazed out from the very balcony from which Bartolo Longo (in an intuition of faith on May 5, 1901) had "seen gazing out" the white figure of the representative of Christ to bless the people calling for universal Peace…4 In 2002, Pope John Paul II’s entrusted his Apostolic Letter on the Rosary to the intercession of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary of Pompeii for the “Cause of Peace and the Cause of the Family!”
